Sherrie Turkle - Connected But Alone

This is a TED talk by Sherrie Turkle which I have used to help develop my idea, it also gives proof to my idea considering what she discusses is what I am looking to explore through my images - How technology distracts us.

A few Quotes that give explanation for using technology and being distracted:

"Because you can text while doing something else, texting does not seem to take time but to give you time. This is more than welcome; it is magical.”

“Texting offers just the right amount of access, just the right amount of control. She is a modern Goldilocks: for her, texting puts people not too close, not too far, but at just the right distance. The world is now full of modern Goldilockses, people who take comfort in being in touch with a lot of people whom they also keep at bay.”

Problem with Project Idea:

Issues with Project:

After much deliberation I have decided to slightly alter the project idea due to the difficulties and issues that would arise if I went through with it. The clear issue is of course picturing children, I was extremely lucky that the original picture that sparked this idea was of a child's back and not their face. This I found after going into Brighton to take more photos was very unlikely to happen again, as many of times the children were in buggies and I didn't want to cause any problems with any of the subjects.

To avoid this issue with the law I have decided to change the project to look at the distractions there are with technology, whether this be a parent and their child, or a driver texting on the road. This can also be a two people walking together, friends maybe, both being on their phones: together but alone. This, I feel, will be a very powerful exploration into how individuals get distracted with technology and lose focus of the people around them as well as their surroundings.

Databending Image edited:

This was achieved by putting the original image file into a software called audacity (sound editing). From this changing the sounds bass etc. it provided a rather strange edit that looks rather strange.
